CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“What’s the news? How did you get on last night?” Tamsin had rung Feargal on Thursday morning, eager to hear all the latest.

“Lot to tell you actually - can we meet?”

Tamsin flipped through her diary pages. “I’ve got an eleven in Upton-upon-Severn, back here for a walk then a three on the Pershore road. Someone who insists her young puppy should only have two meals a day and wonders why he keeps crying and chewing things up … mad. How about Jean-Philippe’s at two? I’ll have all the dogs with me.”

“I’d love to see all the dogs! Two at The Cake Stop then.” And he rang off, in a hurry as always.

Her eleven o’clock went very well. It was someone who simply needed to stop saying NO to her dog whenever she saw him, and who was amazed at the results Tamsin got so fast with a different attitude. So she arrived at the café with Quiz, Banjo, and Moonbeam, in high spirits. As she went to the counter, Kylie smiled and nodded to the back of the shop where Feargal had commandeered a table with lots of space behind for all the dog mats, and on the table were two steaming mugs.

“Nearly forgot!” Kylie called after her. “There’s a children’s party in the Upper room this afternoon, so if Emerald arrives early for her new class I might still be clearing up.”

“I’ll tell her, Kylie - thanks!”

And thanks were due again as she arrived at the table with her coffee waiting for her. “Oh thank you!” said Tamsin as the dogs greeted their friend then settled on their mats. The snow and ice had long gone and had been replaced with rain and mud, so she was careful to keep the dogs’ paws off laps and on their beds. She pulled an old towel out of her dog bag and gave twelve paws and two swishing tails a quick rub. At last, she peeled off her waterproof and sat opposite Feargal with a sigh, wrapping her damp, slightly red, hands round her coffee mug to warm them up.

“What have you been up to today, Feargal?”

“Recovering from last night’s exertions! I’m pretty stiff, I can tell you. So I’ve been knocking around the office. Doing some research.”

“Into?”

“Into Jim Hansom’s business venture.”

“Oh, really? That’s interesting! What prompted this particular investigation?”

Feargal removed his hand from Quiz’s wet head and leant forward, elbows on the table. “I heard Adam having a go at Jim last night. He was asking what the delay was on the Nighthawks accounts. Jim looked really uncomfortable. I couldn’t hear what the delay was, but he was very defensive about it.”

“What did Adam say?”

“I couldn’t earwig too obviously. But he said something about Jim needing to get a move on and stomped off. I got the impression this was not the first time of asking.”

“So you’re checking out his official business for funny figures?”

“I am. And I’m waiting for a couple of reports to come back from colleagues who cover Stourport.
